Rituals of Gauri Vrat

  1. Firstly, women observe this fast for five long days with one meal a day. It is called Aloona Vrat as devotees avoid salty food or salt intake during the fast. Moreover, the use of salt is completely prohibited during this period.
  2. Apparently, at some places, devotees also avoid the use of cereals and all kinds of vegetables and consume only falahaar aka fruits and non cereal food items like sabudana, kuttu, rajgira etc.
  3. Especially on the very first day of fasting, jowar/wheat grains are sown in a small earthen pot and placed at the place of worship. And this sacred pot is worshipped for five days.
  4. Interestingly, women make a garland out of cotton wool decorated with kumkum or sindoor. This garland made of cotton wool is known as nagala. This nagala is offered to the sacred wheat grass pot.
  5. One of my Gujrati friend told me that, it is a custom in Gujrat that small girls of age 8-10 years are asked to perform this puja as after a certain age they may enter puberty and it becomes tough for them to observe this fast.
  6. Further, women offer water to the jowar or wheat grains every morning.
  7. Lastly, on the last day, during night, women perform Bhajan and kirtan and indulge in jagran to invoke blessings of Maa Gauri.
  8. Eventually, on the next day, devotees take out the vessel of the grown wheat or jowar grass and immerse it in holy water or river. Later, on the same day, after the morning worship, the fast is broken with a meal of salt, vegetables and rotis made of wheat.
