As per Hindu Panchang, it is celebrated on the Shashthi of Shukla Paksha in Chaitra mas. Eventually it falls during Chaitra Navratri.

The origins of this ritual trace back to the time of Lord Krishna. As the story goes, when Krishna disappeared during the Rasa Leela, the distressed Gopis searched for him everywhere.
Despite their efforts, they could not find him. In desperation, they turned to nature, the trees, flowers and animals, pleading for guidance.
Eventually, they reached the banks of the Yamuna and sang the Gopi Gita, pouring out their hearts in devotion.
