Introduction
We Hindus believe in honouring and celebrating every day as a new day and new sunshine. Hinduism is full of life lessons, guidance and living examples to look for. One of them is Goddess Sita.
Do you know who was Sita?
Who is Sita?
Sita was daughter of King Janak and consort of Lord Rama ( incarnation of Lord Vishnu). She was one of incarnations of Goddess Lakshmi in treta yug. Her character from Ramayana has told us about the woman of substance.
Popularly, she is known as Janaki, Janaksuta, Bhumija, Janaknandini, Vaidehi, Vandevi, Bhumisuta etc.
Sita : woman of substance
You must be wondering why I have used the term “woman of substance”. Actually, a woman of substance is someone who goes beyond the surface. She’s strong, wise and deeply rooted in her values. It’s about more than about her looks. Its beyond that.
Also its about her integrity, her resilience and the way she carries herself in tough times. When, I think of goddess Sita from the Ramayana, she embodies this perfectly. Likewise, Her strength was shown in enduring hardship. She stayed true to her principles, even when the world tested her patients, integrity and loyalty. She was a perfect character with grace at every walk of Ramayana and Uttar Ramayana.
From being a strong and dutiful daughter to an obliged and caring daughter-in-law, a loving and diligent wife to a strong, doting and independent mother, she performed every role perfectly.
Even today, as modern mothers, it’s hard to imagine doing all that she did. Without technology, money, or any kind of physical, financial, or emotional support, she imbibed values and virtues in her sons, Luv and Kush, effortlessly.
When I read the Uttar Ramayana (the part of the Ramayana after Ravana’s death), I was amazed to believe how strong and resilient she truly was. Despite being a princess and a queen, she stayed simplest without a single question.
Characteristics of Sita
Dutiful and loving daughter
Goddess Sita was the perfect example of a dutiful and loving daughter and sister. From the Ramayana, we learn her strong and intelligent characterstics. In fact, she once won a debate with Gargi, a renowned scholar of that time.
True lover of nature
Not only was she wise and strong, but Goddess Sita was also a true lover of nature. She had a deep connection with the flora and fauna around her. I love imagining her in the forests, surrounded by trees, birds, and animals, embracing the beauty of it all.
Moreover, Sita’s bond with the Earth as a daughter tells us of the harmony and balance that nature can bring into our lives.
Infacr, she was not born out of womb, she was found out by King Janak from the lap of mother Earth.
Do you know she was also called Vandevi in Uttar Ramayana? She stayed in Sage Valmikis ashram during the birth and bringing up of her kids, Luv and kush. There she was given the name Vandevi.
Dedicated Daughter in law
Also, she was also a devoted daughter-in-law, showing respect and care towards King Dasrath and her three mothers-in-law. Sita balanced these relationships with grace, purity and sanctity.
She treated all memebers of family with the same love and loyalty.
A dotted wife
Besides all her other virtues, Sita was responsible and content wife. She willingly took on the hardship of exile to be with Lord Rama. She could have stayed behind in the palace, but chose to go with him. This shows her deep loyalty and sense of duty towards her husband.
She truly stood by his side, no matter what. Her commitment and selflessness tells us about the power of love and devotion. You can read about the chemistry and bond between Lord Rama and Goddess Sita in my previous blog on Shri Ram and women in his life.
A strong mother
Lastly, as a mother, she was splendid woman. Under her care, Luv and Kush grew into strong, virtuous and intelligent young men. Her guidance shaped them into the remarkable individuals they became. Sita’s role as a mother was another role I look upon to for strength and wisdom.
