Introduction

Today is Dhanteras 2024 and we are going to have the festival of Diwali for next five days. Apparently, it is that time of year when every household worships Lord Ganesh and Goddess Lakshmi.

Thus, it is especially auspicious to recite the Shri Suktam to honor and please Goddess Lakshmi, who, in Hinduism, is revered as the goddess of wealth, prosperity, happiness, and splendor.

For me, reciting the Shri Suktam is one of the most powerful ways to connect with her divine blessings. This sacred hymn is recited in front of the Shri Yantra, creating a unique vibration as each letter, syllable, and word in the fifteen verses evokes the essence of Goddess Lakshmi.

What is Shri Suktam?

Shri Suktam has deep roots in the Rigveda. It consists of fifteen core mantras, followed by the sixteenth, known as the Phalashruti. Later, eleven additional mantras were added and are called the Mahalakshmi Suktam. This powerful recitation is often performed on Diwali and even in the days leading up to it. For those seeking Goddess Lakshmi’s blessings, reading the complete Shri Suktam brings true fulfillment.

Significance of Shri Suktam

Kings, paupers, young and old—everyone wishes for Goddess Lakshmi to always reside in their homes. However, people strive to gain her blessings and acquire wealth. According to the Rigveda, reciting the Shri Suktam, chanting mantras, and performing havan are powerful ways to please Goddess Lakshmi and fulfill one’s desires. It is especially effective to recite Shri Suktam and chant mantras on Diwali night, during Amawasya. On this auspicious night, wishes are sure to be fulfilled.

It is believed that Shri Suktam should be recited daily. Its importance grows even more during Navratri, Diwali, and on every Friday.

Is there any step to follow to read Shri Suktam?

According to the Rig Veda, chanting the Shri Suktam mantras between 11 p.m. and 1 a.m. on Diwali night brings immense blessings. Offering 108 lotus flowers or lotus seeds dipped in cow ghee into a Yagna fire made from belpatra leaves, Palash, and mango wood is especially powerful. When Goddess Lakshmi is worshipped with devotion in the Shodashopachar manner, this ritual promises prosperity, ensuring freedom from poverty for the next seven lifetimes.

Benefits of recieting Shri Suktam

  1. Firstly, Shri Suktam is taken from the Rig Veda. Hence, it has historical relevance.
  2. According to the scriptures, reciting Shri Suktam daily brings all the comforts of life.
  3. Additionally, those who recite it regularly experience no shortage of wealth or fame.
  4. This prosperity is believed to continue even into their next birth if you recite it daily.
  5. Originally composed in Sanskrit, Shri Suktam can also be recited in Hindi to prevent errors, as Sanskrit is less commonly used. One can feel spiritual calmness while reading it.
  6. Ultimately, the most important aspect is your faith and feelings while reciting it.
