Sheetla Saptami 2025 is also known as Basoda at many places.
Namaste!
Welcome to the world of engrossed readings at www.onindianpath.com. Today we are going to talk about Sheetla Saptami 2025.
Introduction
“Jesa khaoge ann, wesa rahega tann” is a famous Hindi proverb commonly used in our daily lives. It means that what we eat reflects on our health. You must be wondering why I am talking about food today. Hinduism is full of festivals and celebrations, with each day bringing its own significance. And no celebration is complete without food and cuisines.
On different occasions and festivals, we prepare sattvic, rajasic and tamasic foods. One such unique tradition is Basoda, where “basi” means stale food is consumed by households. On the day of Sheetla Saptami, we eat pre-cooked food as part of the ritual.
What is Basoda 2025 ?
For me, Basoda Puja holds a special place. As it is dedicated to Goddess Sheetla, the divine protector of health and well-being. This puja is performed on Krishna Paksha saptami after Holi and is also known as Sheetla Saptami.
Date and tithi of Sheetla Saptami 2025
While the festival typically falls seven or eight days after Holi, I have noticed that many families, including mine, prefer celebrating it on the first Monday or Friday after Holi. It’s a beautiful tradition that connects us to our roots and reminds us of the importance of rituals and devotion.
As per Gregorian calendar, we have Sheetla Saptami on Friday, March 21, 2025. Eventually, Sheetala Saptami Puja Muhurat will be from 06:19 AM to 06:28 PM (12 hours 09 minutes).
However, the Saptami tithi will start on March 21, 2025 at 01:15 AM and the Saptami tithi will end up on March 22, 2025 at 02:53 AM.
Moreover, we have tithi of Sheetla Ashtami Saturday, March 22, 2025. You can read my blog on Sheetla Ashtami 2025.

Certainly, Sheetla Saptami is more popular in North Indian states like Gujarat, Rajasthan, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh.
It’s a unique way of honouring Goddess Sheetla. As per Durga purana, Sheetla mata is an incarnation of Goddess Durga. Also she is believed to control diseases like smallpox and measles. Through this puja, we seek her blessings for protection and good health, a practice that has been passed down through generations with faith and reverence.
Rituals of Sheetla Saptami 2025
In our family, the tradition of Basoda festival is observed with deep devotion. On this day, we do not light a fire to cook food, as per the custom. Instead, we prepare all the meals a day earlier and consume the pre-cooked food on Sheetla Saptami.
And, we do have bathing rituals with cold water. Also, on the day of Basoda or Sheeta Saptami, the devotees observe fast and goes to the temple of Goddess Sheetla and worship Goddess with turmeric and Bajra. Infact, they offer bhog to the deity that is made up of rice, curd and jaggery.
Additionally, after the Basoda Puja, we listen to Basoda Vrat Katha. Although, there is a ritual to worship at the Holika Dahan place, where Holi Pyre was burnt. Lastly, devotees touch the feets of their elders and take blessings of the elders of their house. At the end, they themselves take the same food as offerings as prasad.
In Gujarat, a festival similar to Basoda is celebrated a day before Krishna Janmashtami, known as Sheetla Saptam. This festival, too, is dedicated to Goddess Sheetla, who is revered for her power to protect against diseases. This practice 0reflects the deep cultural connection and devotion towards Goddess Sheetla, uniting communities in faith and tradition.
