Introduction

As we all know Ekadashi is the titthi held dear to hindu god Shri Vishnu. After Putrada Ekadashi, we will have Shattila Ekadashi, also known as Magh Krishna Ekadashi. As it falls in magh mas of Hindu panchang. However, the name “Shattila” is derived from the practice of consuming tila aka sesame seeds, which are believed to have purifying properties.

Although, I have told in my earlier blog on Sakat Chaturthi, the origin of sesame seeds in hindu scriptures. It is believed to come from the sweat of Shri Hari Vishnu.

Specifically, sesame seeds are warm in nature and gives you warmth in winters.

Meanwhile, It is believed that a devotee who performs puja and observes a fast on this auspicious day is destined to attain moksha.

Date and tithi of Shattila Ekadashi 2025

Apparently, Shattila Ekadashi falls on 11th day of Krishna Paksha of Magh mas of Hindu Panchang. As per Georgian Calender, we have Shattila Ekadashi on 25th January 2025. The titthi will start at 7:24 PM on January 24, 2025 and will end January 2025.

Besides, the parana time for this Ekadashi will start at 7:06 AM and will end up at 9:16 AM on 26 January, 2025.

Significance of Shattila Ekadashi

Shattila Ekadashi is an extremely significant day in Hinduism as it gives a chance to the devotee to be bestowed with all the auspiciousess and blessings of Shri Hari Vishnu.

Devotees fast on this day and engage in prayers to seek blessings and spiritual upliftment.

Furthermore, it is believed that observing fast and performing puja on this day gives you the benefits and virtuous deeds of donating gold and silver.

Additionally, this vrat brings happiness, prosperity, and wealth to one’s life and family. Moreover, by observing the vrat, a devotee also gets freed from sins, leading to moksha (salvation).

Why it is called Shat-tila?

Subsequently, Shattila Ekadashi is a festival celebrated for its spiritual richness and elevated devotion. It is named Shat-tila Ekadashi because it is advised to use sesame seeds in six different ways on this auspicious day.

  1. Perform bathing rituals with sesame seeds-infused water (til water).
  2. Apply a ubtan made of sesame seeds.
  3. Use sesame seeds in Havan and puja.
  4. Drink sesame seeds water throughout the day.
  5. Donating sesame seeds.
  6. Consuming food items and sweets made of sesame seeds.

Rituals of Shattila Ekadashi

Indeed, a devotee should perform all the rituals stated below with utmost care and resolute focus to attain Moksha and fruitful results of paap nivarini Ekadashi.

Do you know why I have called it Paap nivarani? Paap nivarini is a Hindi word means an event that frees you from all the sins.

Although, one should keep all points in mind:

  1. Firstly, a devotee should wake up early in the morning, take a bath with water that contains sesame seeds as stated in ancient Hindu texts.
  2. Secondly, the devotee should not consume food after the sunset of Dashmi (previous day).
  3. Refrain yourself from eating rice, wheat and other tamsik food items.
  4. Also, Install a picture or an idol of Lord Shri Vishnu in your temple.
  5. Do sprinkle water of sesame seeds and Gangajal drops all over the house. Also, sprinkle water of sesame seeds and Gangajal drops (water of river Ganga) on the idol and its surroundings and bathe the idol with Panchamrit, which must include sesame seeds.
  6. Lastly, light a diya of ghee, offer flowers, bhog, chandan, kumkum, akshat and sweets to the Lord with sesame seeds.
  7. Infact, do not forget to enchant Vishnu Sahastranama and aarti.
  8. End your fast on Dwashi tithi by donating food items, clothes and money to the needy people. Apparently, Donating sesame seeds is known as one of the most important rituals on this Ekadashi. Indeed, it is believed that one may get to stay in heaven for as many days as the number of sesame seeds one has donated.
