As name suggests, Santan is a Hindi word use for children. On this auspicious day, women observe fast and do worship Lord Shiva and Goddess Parwati for obtaining blessings. Additionally, to remove problems and obstacles from children’s life, women do observe thus vrat.

Santan Saptami Katha
Once upon a time, Maharaj Yudhishthira asked Lord Krishna to tell him about a fast which would solve all the problems related to children. Hearing this, Shri Krishna replied, I will tell you a mythological story, listen carefully!
Once upon a time, sage Lomaya went to Vasudev Devaki’s house in Mathurapuri of Brajrat, where the Rishiraj was welcomed very well, due to which he became happy and started telling him the story. While telling the story, sage Lomaya said, O Devaki! The evil, wicked and sinful Kansa has killed many of your sons, due to which your heart is very sad.
Similarly, King Nahush’s wife Chandramukhi was also unhappy, but she observed the Santan Saptami fast with full devotion and as a result of which she got the happiness of a child.
Hearing this, Devaki folded her hands and said to the sage – ‘O Rishiraj! Kindly tell me the entire story of Queen Chandramukhi and this fast in detail, so that I too can get rid of this sorrow. Then sage replied – ‘O Devaki! Nahush was the king of Ayodhya, his wife Chandramukhi was very beautiful. A Brahmin named Vishnu Gupta lived in his city. His wife’s name was Bhadramukhi. She was also very beautiful. The queen and the Brahmin woman had great bonding. One day they both went to take a bath in the Saryu river.
However, they saw many other women after bathing in the Saryu river and wearing clean clothes were worshipping the idols of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parwati in a pavilion. Seeing this the queen and the Brahmin woman asked those women, “Sisters! Which god are you worshipping and why are you observing this fast? Hearing this, the women said that we are observing the fast of Santan Saptami and we have worshipped Shiva-Parvati with sandalwood and rice etc. according to the Shodashochara method. All this is the rule of this holy fast. Hearing this, the queen and the Brahmin woman also resolved to observe this fast and returned home. The Brahmin woman kept observing this fast regularly, but Queen Chandramukhi, due to her royal power, sometimes observed this fast and sometimes not. She was not regular on her fasting rituals.
After some time both of them died. In the next rebirth, the queen took birth in womb of monkey and the Brahmin woman got the womb of a hen. Eventually, Brahmin woman did not forget anything even in the womb of a hen and kept meditating on Lord Shankar and Parwati, whereas the queen forgot everything even in the womb of a monkey.
After some time, both of them left their animal body. Now their third birth was in human form. That Brahmin woman was born as a daughter to another Brahmin woman. That Brahmin girl was named Bhushandevi and she was married to Agnisheel Brahmin of Gokul. Bhushandevi was so beautiful that even without ornaments, she looked very beautiful. Even Kamadeva’s wife Rati used to feel shy in front of her. Bhushandevi gave birth to eight sons who were very beautiful, endowed with all the qualities, charming like the moon, brave, devoted to duty and well behaved. All this was the result of fasting for santan Saptami. On the other hand, the queen who was averse to Shiva did not have any son from her womb. She remained unhappy due to being childless.
Apparently, the bond that existed between the queen and the brahmin woman in the previous birth, still remained. When the queen started growing old, she had a son who was dumb, deaf and unintelligent and had a short life. He left this fragile world at the age of nine. Now the queen was very sad and restless in grief of losing her son. By chance, the brahmini Bhushan Devi reached the queen’s place with her sons. She also felt very sad on hearing the queen’s condition, but nobody can do anything about it.
No one can change what is written by karma and destiny. The queen was also deviated from her karma, that is why she had to suffer. On seeing the grandeur and eight sons of the Bhusandevi, queen became jealous of her and sin arose in her mind. That brahmini removed the queen’s sorrow and left her eight sons with the queen.
The queen, overcome by sin, mixed poison in laddus and fed them to the Brahmin’s sons with the intention of killing them, but by the grace of Lord Shiva, none of the children died. Infact, seeing this, the queen was very surprised and resolved to find out the secret.
Indeed, when Bhushan Devi came back from finishing the worship of God, the queen told her that I mixed poison in laddus and fed them to kill your sons, but none of them died. What charity and pious fast have you done? Due to which your sons did not die and you are enjoying new happiness every day. You are very fortunate. Explain their secret to me honestly, I will be very grateful to you. Hearing such humble words of the queen, Bhushan Brahmini said, listen to me carefully, in your previous birth you were the wife of King Nahush and your name was Chandramukhi, mine was Bhadramukhi and I was a Brahmin, we used to live in Ayodhya and we were freinds
Contrarily, one day we both went to take bath in the Saryu river and seeing other women fasting on Santan Saptami and worshipping Lord Shiva, we had pledged to observe this great fast. But you forgot everything and you were accused of lying, which you are facing even today. I have always observed this fast with proper conduct and I still do it. In the second birth, you were born as a monkey and I was born as a hen. By the grace of Lord Shiva, I did not forget the effect of this fast and even in this birth and continued to observe this fast according to the rules. You forgot it even in your monkey birth. I am telling you about the condition of three births. I think that this is a big problem on you and this is the only reason for it and there can be no other reason for it. That is why I say that you should still observe the Santan Saptami fast as per the rules so that your problem gets resolved.
Sage Laumash said- after listening to the story of her previous life and her resolution from the mouth of Bhushan Brahmini, the queen remembered the old things and started repenting and fell at the feet of Bhushan Brahmini and begged for forgiveness. Then after she started singing songs of the immense glory of Lord Shankar and mata Parwati.
From that day onwards, the queen observed the fast of Santan Saptami as per the rules, due to the effect of which the queen got the happiness of children and after enjoying all the happiness, the queen went to Shivlok.
Conclusion
Hence, one must observe this fast for the well being and prosperity of the family and wards.
Have a blessed time ahead.
