Amawasya is a significant tithi and marks the begining of the Hindu mas or month of Hindu Panchang. Hinduism includes celebrations and festivity all throughout the days of the year.
Further, people also know Phalguna Amawasya by other names like Mawas, Amavas, or Amawasi.
What is Amawasya?
Amawasya, is a Sanskrit term meaning “no moon”. As, it marks an important day in the Hindu Panchang every month.
Apparently, Hindus consider it a significant day. They begin Shukla Paksha, the bright half of the month, after Amawasya. Eventually, panchang starts Krishna Paksha, the dark half, after Purnima (full moon).
Although, on this day, the Moon comes between the Earth and the Sun, making it invisible to us.
Significance of Phalgun Amawasya 2025

- Besides, many believe that on this day, the souls of ancestors visit the Earth to check on our well-being and guide us through dreams, intuitions, and Amawasya rituals. We must perform Shradh rituals to bring them peace and seek their blessings.
- On Phalguna Amawasya, people consider donating food and clothes highly auspicious and meaningful.
- Likewise, phalguna Amawasya is also an ideal day to perform puja for removing Kalsarp Dosha in Horoscope.
- Phalguna Amawasya holds great significance in lives of Hindus. Phalguna Amawasya is special as Phalguna fairs are held at many religious pilgrimage sites on this day.
- Also, Falguni Amawasya is believed to grant salvation to ancestors. Taking a holy dip at pilgrimage sites, especially in the Ganga, is considered highly auspicious on this day.
- Lastly, taking a holy dip in river like Ganga and Yamuna free us from all misery, poverty and troubles in life.

Date and tithi of Phalgun Amawasya 2025
Phalgun Amawasya is falling on 27th February 2025 (Thursday).
However, the Amawasya tithi will start on 27 February at 08:54 AM and will end up at 06:14 AM on 28 February, 2025.
Rituals to be performed on Phalguna Amawasya 2024
- Firstly wake up early in the morning and take a bath in the holy river. If that is not possible, then you can bathe in clean water available at home by adding a few drops of Gangajal in it. To get gangajal at your doorstep, click here.
- Thenafter the bath, offer Arghya to Lord Surya.
- Secondly, vow to keep a fast for the whole day and break the fast in the evening.

- Additionally, whole family must pay gratitude to Pitra at the bank of the holy river by offering clothes and food to the Brahmins.
- Also, light a diya of mustard oil in the evening under the peepal tree and remember your ancestors. Do not forget to circumambulate the Peepal tree seven times.
- Eventually, it is considered very important on this day to donate a cow to the Brahmins. If donating a cow is not possible, in that case, one should feed fodder to a cow.
