Papankusha Ekadashi also known as Padma Ekadashi. It is a Hindu religious observance falls on Ekadashi. And it is dedicated to Lord Padamnabha (incarnation of Lord Vishnu) also known lotus naveled Lord Vishnu.

Date of Papankusha Ekadashi

In 2024, we have Papankusha Ekadashi on 13 October 2024. It falls on Ekadashi (11th day)of Ashwin mas of Hindu Panchang.

The titthi of Ekadashi will start at 9:08 AM on 13 October, 2024 and ends at 6:41 AM on 14 October 2024.

Although, the Prana time will start at 1:16 PM and end at 3:34 PM on 14 October 2024.

Significance of Papankusha Ekadashi

Papankusha Ekadashi holds profound significance for Vishnu lovers.Generally, devotees fast and engage in prayers and rituals to seek forgiveness for their sins and to purify their souls on this day. As per Puranas, Papankusha Ekadashi help one attain liberation from their sins and achieve spiritual growth.

Moreover, the name Papankusha is derived from the belief that observing this Ekadashi helps in eradicating sin (paap). Eventually the core purpose is spiritual purification and seeking forgiveness.

Although, sages and scholars suggest that even after performing thousands of Ashwameva Yagyas and hundreds of Surya Yagyas, one does not get even the 16th part of the results of this fast. It can be said that there is no greater fast than this fast. Whoever keeps vigil at night during this fast attains heaven. Not only this, the next 10 generations of that person also get the fruits of this fast.

Hinduism tells us the primary purpose of fasting on ekadashi is to gain control over the mind and bodily senses, and channel it towards spiritual progression. Devotees worship Lord Vishnu for their spiritual growth.

Story if Papankusha Ekadashi

As per Bhagavad Gita, once Lord Krishna told the story of Papankusha Ekadashi to Yudhishthira. Once upon a time, there was a hunter named Krodhana who used to live on the Vindhyachal Mountains. He was involved in the wicked deeds throughout his life. At the end of his life, Yamraj ordered his representative to bring the hunter to his court. Krodhana was so scared that he approached a sage Angira and pleaded him for help. Sage Angira guided him to worship Lord Vishnu on the Ekadashi of Shukla Paksha of Ashwin Month. Krodhana observed the Papankusha Ekadashi fast. Hence, his soul was taken to heaven. He attained salvation at the feet of Lord Vishnu.

What are the rituals of Papankusha Ekadashi?

  • Devotees must have bathing rituals early morning on Papankusha Ekadashi. They should get up early and wear clean clothes after taking a bath.
  • They should observe a strict fast on this day. The fasting ritual of Papankusha Ekadashi starts from the Dashami day. A single simple meal is consumed before sunset.
  • While observing the Vrat, the devotees must not lie or conduct any sinful acts. Also they should not be indulge in any kind of addiction like drugs, non-veg or consumption of alcohol.
  • And devotees must offer food and other donations to needy and poor on this day.
  • Devotees must spend the time reciting and singing Vedic mantras and bhajans in praise of Lord Vishnu.
  • Reading Vishnu Sahasranam is also recommended.
  • An idol of Lord Vishnu seated on the Garuda is worshipped. Devotees chant mantras for praising Lord Padmanabha and also worship with flowers, betel leaves, lamps and incense sticks.
  • At the end aarti is performed. If a person cannot observe a fast, they can donate clothes, foods and other essentials to needy and poor people.
  • Grains and rice are prohibited in the fast.
  • Instead, only fruit, vegetables and milk products are eaten. This period of abstinence starts from sunrise on the day of Ekadashi to sunrise on the following day.
