Why is it called Mudiya Purnima?

Do you know why is it called Mudiya Purnima? On this auspicious Purnima, great saint Shri Pad Sanatan Goswami Maharaj, Acharya of Shri Chaitanya Sampradaya, the main disciple of Shri Krishna Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, went to heavenly abode.

Additionally, Sanatan Pad Goswami used to live with his head shaved. The people of Braj also used to call him Mudia Baba. When he departed for Gowlok, his disciples shaved their heads, took a bath in Mansi Ganga and performed Parikrama. Since then Guru Purnima came to be known as Mudia Purnima in Govardhan. Due to shaved heads, the disciple sadhus were called Mudia and since it was a Poono (full moon) day, this day came to be called Mudia Poono.

And to honour his devotion, existence and love towards Govardhan, many devotees shave their head on this day and perform Parikarma. As in Hindi language Mudwana is a word for shaving hair of head, it is given name Mudiya Puno.

Kumbh of Braj

The fair, held at Giriraj Govardhan, has been a symbol of devotion and spirituality for over 464 years. Devotees gather to visit Govardhan Dham for darshan, where signs of Lord Krishna’s pastimes are preserved in the rocks of Giriraj mountain, stretching across the 7 Kos. Apparently, yhe highlight of the day is the Sapta Kosi Parikrama of the mountain, a sacred ritual that draws thousands of pilgrims seeking spiritual connection and blessings.

Who was Sanata pad Goswami?

Shri Pad Sanatan Goswami Maharaj, the revered Acharya of Shri Chaitanya Sampradaya, was a true hero of his time. Born in West Bengal in 1488 AD, he served as a minister to the Mughal Emperor Hussain. But despite his royal life, he wasn’t interested in luxury.

Subsequnetly, one day, after meeting Shri Krishna Chaitanya, he decided to give it all up. He became a recluse, seeking a higher purpose. He received initiation from Chaitanya Mahaprabhu in Banaras, which marked the beginning of his spiritual journey.

Later, in 1515 AD, he came to Shri Dham Vrindavan. He dedicated his life to serving Lord Krishna, and in 1526 AD, he installed the idol of Madan Mohan. Consequently, his devotion was unshakeable.

During his travels, he reached Govardhan and settled near the Chakleshvar temple by Manasi Ganga. He lived humbly and made it a point to circumambulate Giriraj Govardhan and bathe in Manasi Ganga every day.

With passage of time, as he grew older and frailer, he never stopped his daily rituals. It is believed that Lord Krishna, touched by his devotion, appeared before him.

Besides, he left footprints on a rock on Giriraj mountain and said, “Baba, by walking around this rock, you will feel the same blessings as if you walked around the entire Giriraj Govardhan.”

Conclusion

Now, you must be amazed to know that such deep devotion holds the power to bring Lord Krishna even closer to you. Sanatan Goswami’s unwavering faith and dedication made him a living example of how pure devotion can manifest divine blessings in the most miraculous ways. His life teaches us that with sincere love and devotion, we can experience the presence of the Lord in our lives, just as he did.

Mudiya Purnima 2025 is for those seeking blissful solace and blessings.
