What is Margashirsha Purnima?

According to Hindu mythology, Magha Purnima is considered to be a sacred day to perform spiritual and religious rituals. This Purnima falls in the holy month of Marghshirsha.

Significance of Margashirsha Purnima 2025

The month of Margashirsha is considered as sacred as Kartik mas. Our Sanatan Dharma guides us to live peacefully and follow righteousness on this holy day.

However, as per holy text of Hinduism, the first day of Margashirsha marked the beginning of Satyug, the age of truth and virtue, as started by the gods.

Performing a bath in a holy river on the eve of Magha/Margashirsha Purnima is considered highly auspicious. Consequently, devotees gather in large numbers at the banks of rivers like the Ganga, Yamuna, Godavari, and Narmada to partake in this sacred ritual.

Devotees bathe in holy rivers, perform acts of charity, and make donations to absolve themselves of past and present sins, ultimately attaining moksha or liberation.

Furthermore, on Margashirsha Purnima, they worship Lord Vishnu and the Moon God, believing that offering prayers to these deities fulfills their desires.

What is kalpvas?

In the month of Magha, devotees take a holy bath each morning in holy rivers like the Ganga or Yamuna. This daily ritual begins on Paush Purnima and continues until Magh Purnima. According to belief, religious deeds, like charity and acts of kindness, performed during this period bring swift blessings. Thus, this period is called Kalpavas.

So, during this sacred time, devotees engage in charity and good deeds as much as they can. Magh Purnima also marks the end of Kalpavas. Throughout the month of Magha, many devotees stay on the banks of the Ganga in Prayag, a tradition known as Kalpavas. Eventually, it also covers Kumbh Mela.
