Date and tithi of Mahalakshmi vrat 2024
According to Hindu Panchang, this vrat begins on the Ashtami (eighth) day of the Shukla Paksha of Bhadrapada mas (four days after Ganesh Chaturthi) and ends on the Ashtami day of the Krishna Paksha of Ashwin mas (during pitru paksha). However, devotees pray to the goddess during this time to bring joy, wealth and solve money problems.
In 2024, the vrat started on September 11 and ends on September 24.
The Mahalakshmi fast will be observed on 24 September. Since the ashtami Tithi begins at 5:45 pm on 24 September, the fast is kept in the evening and night. The ashtami will last until 4:44 pm on 25 September, so some women may choose to fast on that day for convenience.
Key highlights of Mahalakshmi Vrat
i) Dedicated to Goddess Lakshmi, this vrat lasts for 16 days. During this time, worshiping Goddess Lakshmi is believed to enhance wealth, fortune, prosperity, beauty and strength. Women observe this fast for marital happiness too.
ii) Moreover, Mahalakshmi Vrat is a sacred observance for invoking happiness, prosperity and wealth in life. Much like the worship of Maa Lakshmi during Diwali, this vrat is held in the month of Kwar and is also known as Gaj Lakshmi Vrat. It carries great significance, as those who observe it are believed to never face a shortage of wealth and food, and continue to receive the blessings of Goddess Mahalakshmi. According to the story of Mahalakshmi Vrat, even Mother Kunti kept this fast, and it is said that Gajaraj, the divine elephant, descended from heaven to bless her.
iii) Offering items beloved to Goddess Lakshmi like Lotus, Kamalgatta, etc during this time is thought to bring success in business as well.
Process/vidhi for Mahalakshmi Vrat 2024
- Wake up early in the morning and have bathing rituals on time.
- Gather all worship materials and set up an altar with a statue of Goddess Mahalaxmi.
- Offer a chunari (sacred cloth) to the goddess, and gradually present betel nuts, coconuts, sandalwood, flowers, rice, and fruits.
- Thenafter, offer solah Shringaar (sixteen adornments) to hind goddess Mahalaxmi maa.
- Although, as per ancient texts, it is advised to fill a pot with clean water, place a coconut on it, and set it near the goddess.
- Light a diya and perform the Mahalaxmi Aarti, asking for forgiveness for any mistakes made during the puja.
Rules for observing Mahalaxmi Vrat
- Firstly, refrain from consuming tamasic (impure) foods like onion, garlic, non veg items and alcohol for the 16 days.
- Secondly, maintain household purity by thoroughly cleaning the home.
- Throughout the duration of the vrat, ensure to perform the morning and evening puja of Goddess Lakshmi according to the prescribed rituals.
- Additionally, during the vrat, it is important to wear a yellow-colored string (peela dhaga) with sixteen knots on the left hand. Additionally, this should be done as part of the rituals to enhance the spiritual significance of the fast.
- Avoid sour foods during the vrat.
- After the puja, sprinkle water with sixteen strands of Durva (a sacred grass) on your body, which is considered auspicious.
