Introduction

Krishna janamastami is day on which Lord krishna was born. Further, it is the day of Ashtami of Krishna Paksha of Bhadpadra mas of Hindu Panchang. Usually it falls either on August or September every year. The great existence and revervance of most loved Hindu God, Shri Krishna is explained in this blog. Date of Krishna Janmashtami 2025

Lord Krishna was born on Rohini Nakshatra on the Ashtami of Bhadrpada mas of Hindu panchang. This is going to be 5252nd Birth Anniversary of Lord Krishna.

Apparently, in 2025, we are going to witness this enchanting celebrated day on two dates, August 16, 2025 and August 15, 2025. Also, Krishna Janmashtami has following details for August 15 :

Nishita Puja Time – 12:01 AM to 12:44 AM, (Duration – 00 Hours 44 Minutes)

Dahi Handi on Saturday, August 16, 2025

Ashtami tithi will start at 11:49 PM on August 15, 2025 and will end up at 9:34 PM on August 16, 2025.

Moreover, Rohini Nakshatra will start from 4:38 AM on August 17, 2025 till 3:17 AM on August 18, 2025.

Many of you must be thinking why do we have two janamashtami celebrations. Actually,any math celebrate the day with Nakshatra postion on different dates.

The significant fact of this tithi is that it has

As per Padam Purana, if a devotee observe fast on this auspicious day, he and his family will recieve wealth, prosperity and love in abundance. Ultimately they are blessed to go to Vaikuntha Dham.

Confused over 15 or 16 August?

However, the Janambhoomi temples of Mathura have announced that the divine birth anniversary of Lalo (another name for Lord Krishna) will be celebrated on 15th August 2025. While ISKCON celebrate it on 16th August, 2025. The confusionlies between samarta Ideologies and vaishnav ideologies.

According to Smarta followers, the day of Janmashtami in the Hindu calendar always falls on the Saptami or Ashtami tithi. Likewise, Vaishnav Sect followers prefer to the Ashtami Tithi and Rohini Nakshatra to celebrate Janmashtami instead the Saptami Tithi.

Significance and Rituals of Krishna Janmashtami 2025

a) Apparently, the celebration of birth anniversary of Lord Krishna is also called Krishan janmotsav or Gokulashtami. Also, it is celebrated at a grand level mainly in Braj Kshetra with glee and joy. Braj Kshetra include Mathura, Vrindavan, Barsana, Gokul and other nearby areas where Lord Krishna has spent his childhood.

b) Further, plays and dramas are organised in many temples and public places before his birth anniversary to show his mischievous activities as a part of Janmashtami celebrations. Infact, at many places, we have Dahi handi celebrations on this day revering makkhan chor swaroop of Lord Krishna.

c) Specially in Northern India, devotees often set up Hindola Sajan. It displays depicting Krishna’s infancy and his leelas of Kaliya Naag vadh, RasLeela etc at one place with lots of small toys, caricatures and handmade settings.

d) Moreover, Krishna lovers engage in devotional singing, dance performances and reading of religious texts like Geeta that narrate Krishna’s stories. Many organisations and group of people organise fancy dress competition and other cultural events all over the country.

e) Most common ritual is to observe the day long fast. Fasting until midnight, when it is believed that baby Krishna was born. Additionally, temples are adorned with fresh flowers and decorations. You must have observed the the idol of Laddu Gopal is kept inside the cucumber. Later, the idol is bathed in water, ghee, dahi, makhan, milk and honey. This makes panch amrit which is distributed amongst devotees as prasad.

And, many devotees make colorful rangoli designs and share festive meals with family and friends on this day.

Legends of Krishna Janmashtami

According to Bhagwad Purana, devoted couple, Devaki and Vasudev, was captured by her brother Kansa. Kansa heard the Bhavishya wani (announcement from Sky) about his death. It was announced that the eighth child of this couple would kill the King Kansa.

So, to avoid his death, he kept the couple under his arrest. And, on Ashtami of Bhadrpada maas, when baby Krishna was born, maya played her game by mystically making every jailer sleep deeply. Even mother Devaki was unconscious just after the birth of Krishna.

Infact, Vasudev took the baby Krishna in his lap and went out of the jail without any hitch. Meanwhile, he walked towards Nandgaon, and crossed river Yamuna and went to the house of Nand Baba to drop the little Lord Krishna besides mata Yashoda.

Since then, Krishna Janmashtami is celebrated with great love and devotion all over the world.

Conclusion

Overall, Krishna Janmashtami is a time for devotion, reflection and cultural celebration among followers of Lord Krishna. Also, our celebrations of birth anniversary of Shyam pyare do not stop here, we do have Nandotsav on very next day. Here, it is customary ritual to celebrate the birth of our beloved kanha at Nand Baba house.
