Introduction

Hinduism is all about cleebratikns, devotions and religious and cultural extravanganza. It is filled with tithi and months dedicated to auspicious and religious activies. Likeiwse, we have Sawan mas, Shraddha and Kharmas or different reasons.

Kharmas is regarded not good for auspicious events like marriages, house warming, grih Pravesh, shubh muhurat of opening new ventures, mundan ceremony, annaprasahn ceremony, janeu dharan, karnvedan etc.

Apparently, Kharmas, also known as Mal Mas in the Hindu panchang, spans a duration of 30 days. It is also called Paush Mas.

Date of Kharmas 2024

Apparently, in 2024, we are going to witness Kharmas from December 15, 2024 and ends on January 14, 2025.

However the tithi will start at 10:19 PM on 15 December 2024. On this day, lord Sun enters enter the Sagittarius sign, it is also called Dhanu Sankranti. Mal mas will end on the day of Makar Sankranti in the year 2025. On this day, the Sun will leave Sagittarius and enter Capricorn. In Hinduism, the time of Kharmas is considered inauspicious.

Therefore, marriage, engagement, housewarming and all other auspicious works are prohibited during this period.

Significance of Kharmas

Moreover, Kharmas is the month of Hindu Panchang where all the auspicious activities are prohibited. It is advised to perform all religious activities like donations, meditation, tap, fasting and teerth yatra etc.

Story behind Kharmas 2024

However, according to ancient texts, Suryadev runs his chariot on seven horses throughout the year to maintain the schedule and rotation of day and night.

Once, while running, the horses of Lord Sun felt thirsty and requested their master for a break to drink water. Although Lord Sun couldn’t stop, he was in a dilemma. Suddenly, he noticed two donkeys drinking water by the riverside. He enlisted those donkeys for his chariot, allowing the horses to quench their thirst.

Consequently, the slower pace of donkeys extended the journey to 30 days to complete the round. Additionally, ‘Khar’ is the Sanskrit word for donkeys, giving rise to the term Kharmas.

Dos in Kharmas

Furthermore, ancient text says that this mas is considered good for religious and spiritual activities. Following are the key points one must keep in mind.

  1. Firstly, engaging in donations, tap, mala jap and meditations.
  2. Always offer water to Lord Surya (Surya arghya).
  3. Secondly, try to visit a pilgrimage site during Khar Mas.
  4. Reading Surya Sahastranam and Aditya Hridya Stritam.
  5. Try to take a holy dip in Holy rivers like Ganga and Yamuna during mal Mas.
  6. One may perform Hawana.
  7. People should worship Lord Vishnu.

Get lucky during Khar Mas

Apart from this , there are few astrological remedies you can perform to get the blessings of Goddess Lakshmi during this tenure.

  1. Firstly, always offer water to Tulsi (holy basil).Secondly, light a chomukhi Diya ( four sided diya made with wheat dough) to Tulsi.
  2. Moreover, tie a red coloured thread to Tulsi to recieve the blessings of wealth and prosperity.
  3. Apparently, you can tie a yellow thread to the Tulsi plant to ward off misery and keep negativity away from the house.
  4. Lastly, pluck the manjari of Tulsi, store it in a red-colored cloth, and keep it in a locker to receive the blessings of Maa Lakshmi.

Don’t for Kharmas

We must avoid following things.

  1. Firstly, we should avoid engaging in auspicious events like Marriages, Mundan, Grih Pravesh, janeu dharan etc.
  2. Secondly, we should not go for any new startup venture during this month.
  3. Indeed we should not eat tamasic food items. Try to consume satvic food items, freshly cooked food and healthy food during this month.
  4. In addition to this, we must avoid consumption of alcohol, cigarette and other related items.
