Introduction
India is going to witness majestic shravan mas in the year 2024. We are getting this reverved opportunity to celebrate the bhakti of Lord Shiva in a most auspicious way. This year, it is going to be 5 Mondays in shrawan mas.
Surprisingly, this year the end and beginning of shrawan mas is falling on Mondays.
Significance of Kanwar Yatra
Shrawan mas is an auspicious month of Hindu Panchang. It is the month of worshipping the majestic and holy vibrations of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parwati.
Kanwar Yatra starts with shrawan mss. We are having Kanwar Yatra from 22nd July 2024. Devotees worship their deity with full devotion and carry Kanwar and walk miles to Ganga river to fill the holy water.

Hence, it is believed that shaivianites get the holy water in kanwar to do Jalabhishek of lord Shiva on sawan Shivratri (August 2, 2024). They put two earthen pots on a bamboo stick. And, these pots are called Vishnughat and Brahmaghat. However, these Kanwar are considered to be amalgamation of trinity of gods, Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh.
Moreover, Devotees goes to Haridwar, Gangotri, Gaumukh and like places to collect gangajal to offer it to Lord Shiva.
What is the date of Kanwar Yatra?
Kanwar yatra will start 22nd July 2024 and will conclude August 19, 2024.
The tithi of Sawan Shivratri will start at 3:26 PM on August 2, 2024. Although, the tithi will end up at 3:50 PM on August 3, 2024. Fast will be observed on Friday, August 2, 2024.
Who was the first kanwariya?
Kanwariya is a person who carries the kanwar all though out his journey over his shoulder.
Namely, it is believed that Lord Parshuram was the first kanwariya on the Earth. Few of the legends says that Ravana was the first Kanwariya.
Dont’s in Kanwar Yatra
- Alcohol and related substance are not allowed during Kanwar Yatra.
- No non-veg and tamsik food allowed.
- One need to have bathing rituals done before touching the Kanwar.
- No vehicle is allowed. Kanwar Yatra is always done on foot.
- One can not keep Kanwar on floor. It is advised to keep it above floor even when the devotee is sleeping. They are advised to hang it on a place above the floor.

Apparently, it is believed that Kanwar Yatra is a very pious and auspicious event in the life of a shaivianite.
