Legends of Kaal Bhairav Jayanti

According to the Shiv Purana, a conversation once took place between Lord Brahma and Lord Vishnu. Lord Vishnu asked Brahma, “Who is the greatest creator of the universe?” In response, Brahma proudly declared himself the supreme creator. His arrogance angered Lord Vishnu, and to seek the truth, both of them turned to the four Vedas for an answer.

First, they approached Rigveda, which proclaimed, “Shiva is the greatest; he is omnipotent, and all living beings exist within him.” Next, they asked Yajurveda, which replied, “The one whom we worship through yagyas is the greatest, and that can be none other than Shiva.”

Despite these responses, Brahma remained blinded by his ego and mocked their answers with laughter. At that very moment, Lord Shiva appeared in the form of a divine light. Seeing him, Brahma’s fifth head ignited with the fire of anger. Instantly, Shiva created an incarnation and named him ‘Kaal,’ declaring him the ruler of time and death. This incarnation was none other than Bhairav, who, enraged by Brahma’s arrogance, severed his burning head from his body.

To atone for the sin of Brahma-hatya (Brahma’s slaying), Lord Shiva instructed Bhairav to visit all the holy pilgrimage sites. During his journey, Brahma’s severed head fell from Bhairav’s hand at a sacred site in Kashi, which became known as Kapal Mochan Tirtha.

From that day forward, Kaal Bhairav has remained in Kashi as its eternal guardian. It is believed that every pilgrim visiting Kashi must seek his blessings at Kapal Mochan Tirtha to complete their spiritual journey.
