Hariyali Teej is dedicated to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parwati. This festival and its celebrations have association with blooming love in monsoon season, greenery and marital bliss.

What is Hariyali teej?

Hariyali means greenery and teej means the the third day (tritiya tithi) of the lunar month after Amawasya. It denotes green colour and blooming of nature into a splendid beauty. Moreover, Hariyali teej is also called Sindhara Teej. Hariyali Teej holds great importance for married women, who observe fasting and perform various rituals.

When is Hariyali teej 2025?

In 2025, we will celebrate Hariyal teej July 2025{Sunday}. As per Hindu Panchang, it falls on third day of Shravan Mas. Moreover, the tithi will start at 10 : 41 PM on July 26, 2025 and will end July 27, 2025.

My teej ka sindhara and teej celebrations

Being married to a Marwadi family, how can I miss this amazing festival. Thus, it was a great opportunity for me to know the richness and ecstasy of this gala festival. Besides, my first teej ka sindhara was graciously sent by my mother in law before my marriage to my childhood house for me. In that, she kept all suhaag items, gold gift and sweets delicately hand made for me. I really appreciate such gestures of love and care, intricate part of our culture, where love and bonding strengthens with such celebrations.

Besides, Indian culture is rich with festivals and celebrations that celebrate not just the son of the family but also the daughter-in-law. For those who believe Hindu culture focuses solely on boys, it’s worth noting that it also holds the daughter-in-law in high regard, treating her like a daughter. The term Ghar Ki Lakshmi is not just a popular phrase but a reflection of how she is genuinely valued in the family.

Significance of Haryali Teej

Further, this green coloured festival holds cultural and religious significance. Additionally, it is believed that we honour the union of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parwati on this day along with celebrating the essence of nature’s renewal. As monsoon is the time of rains, greenery and blooming of fuana and flora all over.

Furthermore, women seek the blessings of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parwati for longevity of husband’s life, marital bliss and happiness on this day.

Apparently, even unmarried girls also worship lord Shiva to be blessed with suitable future husband. Generally, women dress in green attire, adorn themselves with jewelry, and henna hands.

And, there are various rituals and traditions, including singing, dancing and swinging on beautifully decorated swings on teej. The customs and rituals change as per different geographical locations. Teej is mainly celebrated in northern part of india viz. Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Rajasthan, Punjab and Haryana.

What are the rituals of Hariyali Teej?

During Hariyali Teej, there are several rituals that married women follow to celebrate the Hariyali Teej:

a) Green Colour

On teej, women typically wear green coloured clothes and adorn themselves with green jewelry and accessories. As green is the dominant color of this vibrant festival symbolizing the lushness of nature.

b) Henna on Hands

One can witness the beauty and intricacy of mehndi or henna on hands and feet of Indian women. Putting Henna on hands is an age old practice for celebrating teej. These mehndi designs includes love and bond of Hindu God Mahadev and Goddess Parvati. Besides one can see the creativity of mehndi designs including lotus, hindu symbol swastik, green beauty, peacocks, birds to complex designs of flowers and nature.

c) Enjoying Swings

Subsequently, women, often swing on beautifully decorated swings as a symbol of happiness and prosperity. Indian families organise special teej functions and parties to welcome the first teej of their newly wedded daughter in laws and daughters. Likewise, these swings are adorned with flowers and colorful decorations.

When I was married, I got a chance to celebrate my first hariyali teej in a special manner. My in laws made special arrangements for me and my sister in law in beautifully adorned swing at rooftop of our house with flowers and glittery lights. I sill get god flashes of this memorable day.

d) Observing Fast

Lastly, married women and unmarried girls observe a day long fast on Hariyali Teej. Also they abstain from food and water for the well-being of their husbands and a blissful marital bond.

e) Worshipping Lord Shiva & Goddess Parwati

Specifically female counter part of Hindu community visit temples to offer prayers to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parwati. Thenafter, a special puja (worship) is performed, during which women offer fruits, flowers, Suhaag items and other traditional items (Chunri, Saree and Nariyal, Diya and dhupbati ) to the deities. Eventually they seek blessings for a harmonious and happy married life.

f) Baina to Mother in Law

We, Marwadis have a tradition of offering Baina to our mother in law and sister in law on this auspicious day. You must be wondering Why I have mentioned Baina?

What is Baina?

Baina is a gift (cash) given to Mother in law by daughter in law in honour of her love, affection and devotion towards her family. Generally, it is given as token of love and respect to the elder married woman of the family by younger married woman. Specifically, it is preformed all throughout out the life. Moreover, it could be in cask and kind( like saree and jewellery item or solah shringaar suhag items).

However, in Baniya families, Baina are common ritual.

g) Singing and Dancing

Certainly, women gather to sing traditional folk songs at a pandal or banquet or family gathering. In addition to that, they perform group and solo dances, celebrating the festival with glee and joy.

Apparently, in the villages and sub urban areas, women come together out in the open fields, pray for the well-being of their husbands and family, sing folk music and dance in chorus and enjoy the spirit of the season. Meanwhile, they enjoy swings decorated with flowers hang on trees.
