Introduction
Hariyali Amavasya is a festival dedicated to the worship of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati.
Date and tithi of Hariyali Amavasya
This year we are going to celebrate Hariyali Amavasya on 4th August 2024. The Amavasya tithi will start at 03:50 PM on 3rd August 2024 and will end at 4:42 PM on 4th August 2024.
Why is it called Hariyali Amavasya?
Moreover, Hariyali Amavasya is also called shravan or sawan amavasya. It is an important hindu observance celebrated with great devotion and joy. Additionally, Amavasya is the new moon day.
Eventually, shrawan mas is a month of flourishing of flora and fauna because of the onset of monsoon and rains in Indian sub-continent. At this point of time, the Earth is covered with beautiful greenery (hariyali), thus, whole month holds importance of greenery. And, Hariyali is the Hindi word for lush greenery.
Again, many parts of the country know this amavasya by different names. In Maharashtra, it is called Gatari Amavasya, Andhra Pradesh people called it Chukkala Amavasya and in Orissa, it is celebrated as Chitalagi Amavasya.
Importance of Hariyali Amavasya
Hariyali Amavasya comes after a day after shravan Shivrati which falls on chaturdashi tithi. To know about tithi, you can read us at tithi. Hariyali teej is celebrated after three days (on tritya). We will bring up an interesting blog on hariyali teej in upcoming days.
Although, as per astrologers and scholars, it is believed that Hariyali Amavasya 2024 is special this year. It is going to have five maha yoga (Shubh yog, Siddhi yog, Guru Pushya yog, Sarvarth Siddhi yog and Amritha siddhi yog), a rare combination which happened over a century ago.
Hence, it holds strong religious value for Hindu followers. Amavasya is the day dedicated to forefathers and ancestors in Hinduism. Likewise Hariyali Amavasya is to appease pitra (ancestors and forefathers).
Eventually, on 4th August 2024, it is going to be a big day, as people circumambulate around holy tree like peepal tree banyan tree etc and donate things to needy peole. Devotees donate 108 items from eatables and Daily needs to poor and needy people.
Rituals to be Followed
a) Firslty, Hindu follower wake up early and completes bathing rituals.They can have holy dip in holy rivers.
b) Secondly, puja is performed and tarpan and sankalp is done by pandit or Brahmin.
c) Thirdly, special meals are cooked like Puri, kheer, halwa etc and served to Brahmin.
d) Fourthly, all these rituals and rites are performed by the eldest male member of the family to offer peace to ancestors and deceased family members.
e) Lastly, daan punya (charity) to the Brahmin is done with faith and devotion. It is believed that all the good deeds and food served on this day offers peace and contentment to our ancestors.
Significance of Hariyali Amavasya
Moreover, it is significantly solemnised nature also. Hariyali Amavasya is the day to mark the importance of greenery around us. We pay gratitude to trees on this day. Moreover in diffferent geographical locations, many people plant saplings on this day, they even gift saplings to each other. And, people do worship peepal tree and circumambulate the tree with puja thali having roli, akshat, kalawa and sweets. People do observe fast on this day.
Shivaites do perform puja and observe fast to adore Lord Shiva on Hariyali Amavasya. Infact, many places of India celebrated this day till teej with great fervour. They holds big fairs with fun filled stalls and colourful stalls.To add up, traditional songs and dances are also performed during the celebrations.
Conclusion
Hariyali Amavasya is marked by various rituals and customs. On Hariyali Amavasya 2024, lets plant more saplings and pay gratitude to the rejuvenation of nature.
