River Ganga is a holy river and revered in India as Goddess. As per hindu text, Ganga took human form of Ganga, daughter of King Himalaya and sister of Goddess Parwati. Besides, another text suggests, she is daughter of Lord Brahma and comes out of his kamandal to wash feet of Lord Vamana (incarnation of Lord Vishnu).
Hence, it a holy water body worshipped all over the India for its purity and religious and cultural context.
What is Ganga Saptami?
Legend says that on the Saptami of Vaishakha Shukla Paksha, Sage Jahnu released the river Ganga from his ear, giving rise to Jahnu Saptami, Ganga Saptami or Ganga Jayanti. Subsequently, also call the river Ganga ‘Jahnavi,’ the daughter of sage Jahnu.
Significance of Ganga Saptami 2025
In Hindu mythology, the Ganges holds a special place. On the day of Ganga Dussehra, the sacred river descended to the Earth. Likewise, her powerful force could have washed everything away. To stop this, Lord Shiva caught her in his hair and gently controlled her descent. He then released the Ganga, allowing her to purify the cursed souls of King Bhagiratha’s ancestors. Who was Sage Jahnu? How is he related to River Ganga?
As Ganga traveled toward Bhagiratha’s kingdom, her powerful currents destroyed the Ashram of Sage Jahnu. Enraged, the sage drank all of Ganga’s waters. On this, Bhagiratha and the deities begged sage Jahnu to release her so she could complete her mission. Touched by their prayers, Jahnu released Ganga from his ear.
Ganga Saptami 2025 : Date and tithi
In 2025, we have Ganga jayanti/Sapatami on Saturday, 3rd May, 2025. However, the tithi will fall on saptami of Krishna paksha of Vaishakh as of Hindu Panchang.
Saptami tithi will start at 7:51 AM on May 3, 2025 and will end up at 7:18 AM on 4th May 2025.
Rituals on Ganga Jayanti/ Ganga Saptami
- Firstly wake up early in the morning.
- Go for holy dip in river Ganga, if not near you, can mix small quantity of Ganga water to your bathing tub.
- Wear clean clothes.
- Read Ganga chalisa and Ganga Aarti.
- If you are it banks of river Ganga, offer Kumkum, akshat, flowers and diya to it.
- It is believed that donating food and clothes to needy people after the holy bath is fruitful.
- Lastly, do not forget to attend great Maha arti of Ganga Maa in the evening at the ghats.
