What is Shiv Khappar?
Shiv Khappar refers to a big bowl in a shape of khappar. It is believed that khappar is filled with food on Falgun Amawasya alongwith reciting panch akshariye mantra of Lord Shiva- Aum Namah Shivaye.
Story of Shiv Khappar Puja
According to Shiv Purana, Mahadev’s family is vast. He owned nothing but Bhaang and lived in the cremation ground, covered in ash. However, the beings in his family, including ghosts, Nandi, a lion, a snake, a peacock, and a mouse, all remained hungry. One day, moved by their hunger, Mahadev decided to seek help and approached Maa Annapurna, asking for food.
In response, she compassionately filled the Shiv khappar (skull bowl) that Lord Shiva carried, with food. Since that moment, Shiv’s khappar has never been empty.
Significance of Shiv Khappar Puja
Even today, as the nurturer of the universe, Maa Annapurna continues to feed everyone through this sacred khappar. Because of this belief, shiv khappar Puja holds special significance in Braj and is observed on the second day of the Maha Shivaratri festival. In Mathura’s Shiva temples, this ritual takes place on Falgun Amavasya following Mahashivratri. Furthermore, it is believed that in the Dwapar Yuga, Lord Shri Krishna himself performed khappar Puja with great devotion and rituals.
On Falgun Amawasya, Shiv khappar Puja holds special significance as it is performed to elevates the importance of this Amavasya even further. It is believed that Mahashivratri worship remains incomplete without offering Shiv Khappar Puja on this sacred day.
Apart from Shiva temples, many devotees also organize this sacred worship in their homes.
With deep reverence, Bhole Shankar is worshiped following traditional rituals. What makes Khappar Puja even more special is the belief that sages and saints represent Mahadev’s divine presence. Offering them donations is seen as offering directly to the Lord himself.
Apparently, I have always found this part of the ritual deeply moving—the way people come together with faith and devotion, filling the bowl-like wooden Khappar held by the sages with besan curry and rice. It is not just an act of giving; it is a heartfelt offering, a way of seeking Mahadev’s blessings while ensuring that no one goes hungry.
