Krishna Janmashtami is one of the grandest festivals. It is celebrated with profound significance across the country and worldwide. The festival is marked by great devotion, fasting and prayers. In fact, the celebrations also include Dahi Handi festivities and Nandotsav.
What is Dahi Handi?
Further, Dahi Handi is an earthen pot hung at a height, filled with butter and dry fruits.
When is Dahi Handi 2025?
Additionally, Dahi handi is celebrated on Navami of Krishna Paksha of Bhadrpada mas of Hindu Panchang. Thus, it would be celebrated on August 17, 2025.
How is Dahi Handi celebrated?
Apparently, it is also called Gopalkala or Dahikala. Here, a group of people known as Govindas forms a human pyramid to reach and break the handi (matki) hung at a height.
Subsequently, after breaking it, they take out the dahi from it. Generally, it is a fun and competitive event mainly organized in Gujarat and Maharashtra. However, it is now celebrated widely all over the country.
Although, Dahi Handi is organized as a competitive event with cash prizes. To add excitement, spectators throw colored water onto the Govindas. Eventually, the day is filled with dance, music and fun. Besides, enthusiasm can be seen with echoes of “Aala re aala Govinda alaa” throughout the celebrations.
History of Dahi Handi Event
As per ancient texts, young Lord Krishna was known for stealing makhan (butter) from the homes of the gopis. Notably, his maternal uncle, Kansa, took control of all the milk products in Vrindavan and Mathura. As a result, the children in the area suffered from under nourishment.
Moreover, Lord Krishna thought of makhan chori as a solution. Likewise, he and his friends would visit the gopis’ houses to steal butter and share it among themselves. To protect the makhan from being stolen, the gopis would hang it in a matki at a height.
Hence, this practice led to the tradition of matki phod, or Dahi Handi festival.
Significance of Dahi Handi
The Dahi Handi event holds great significance in Hinduism. Also, people believe that wherever Kanha set foot, all sorrows vanished. It’s believed that by breaking the pot to steal butter, one dispels the household’s troubles and ushers in joy and prosperity.
Conversely, it is a unique celebration that unites people. It creates bonds through shared enthusiasm amongst different communities and ethnicities.
