Particularly, this story takes us back to an ancient time when the very existence of the universe was under threat. Demons frequently attacked the gods, and one such battle raged on for years, endangering the cosmos. Defeated and distressed, the gods wandered aimlessly, seeking refuge.
And, here came the time of birth of Surya Dev.
Birth of Lord Surya
Once upon a time, the gods faced a grave crisis. Demons constantly attacked them, and a fierce war went on for years, threatening the very existence of the universe. Defeated and lost, the gods wandered from forest to forest, seeking refuge.
Who was Sage Narad?
However, Sage Narad was a great sage who traveled across the universe, constantly chanting Narayan-Narayan as he went. His wisdom and devotion were known everywhere.
Seeking the help from Divine
In their (gods) despair, Devrishi Narad, a wise sage, stepped forward to help.
With their grief in his heart, Narad visited the ashram of Maharishi Kashyap. Apparently, he suggested that only a being as bright and powerful as the Sun could save them. However, this power needed to take a human form to lead the divine forces. The gods understood that only a woman of exceptional strength and purity could give birth to such a child.
Aditi: Mother of Lord Surya
After much thought, the gods realized that only Devmata Aditi, the wife of Maharishi Kashyap, was worthy of this honour. Thus, Aditi agreed to take on the responsibility. And through penance, sacrifice and meditation, she prayed for Lord Surya to be born as her son. In response to her devotion, Lord Surya blessed her with Tathastu—So be it. Hence, he agreed to descend to Earth.
The Birth of Aditya : Lord Surya
Soon, Aditi felt the divine presence of Lord Surya within her. When the time arrived, she gave birth to a radiant child. His light illuminated the world. The gods named him Aditya, recognizing his divine origin from Aditi. As Aditya grew, his strength and brilliance became undeniable. The gods were filled with hope and joy.
Lord Surya as Aditya : the Commander
Eventually, the gods appointed Aditya as the commander of their army. Leading them, he fought the demons. The dark forces couldn’t withstand Aditya’s brilliance. They were soon defeated and retreated to the netherworld. Finally, peace returned to the heavens. The gods made Aditya the protector of the universe and ruler of all planets.
Aditya ascends as Lord Surya
After defeating the darkness, Aditya ascended to his eternal form as Lord Surya, the Sun God. Subsequently, he settled at the center of the universe, becoming the ever-watchful guardian. Spreading light, life, and protection, he continues to inspire the world. Thus, Lord Surya’s journey symbolizes bravery, purity, and divine duty.
