Amla Navami is also known as Akshaya Navami in Hindu Culture.

Namaste!

Welcome to the world of engrossed readings at www.onindianpath.com Let’s read about the most talked and prosperous festival and Vrat of Hinduism in this blog today.

Introduction

We, in Hinduism gives equal respect and importance to all the beings created by almighty. They could be humans, animals, insects and plants. Yes, you got me right. Plants are an important part of Hindu living. We not only plant trees but also worship them for their unmatched properties.

Why do Hindus worship plants?

Once, I was attending a conference where a renowned teacher raised a question about trust and faith issues in Hinduism. Consequently, the discussion quickly turned into a heated debate between the atheists and theists present. When the mic was finally handed to me, I paused for a moment to collect my thoughts and then made my point.

I explained that, just like God, we show respect to plants by making them a special part of our daily lives—watering them and lighting a diya in front of them as a routine practice. Incidentally, I have elaborated on these rituals in my blog on the Tulsi and Peepal trees.

Specifically, my point was that, in ancient times, such practices were introduced to honour medicinal plants for their invaluable contributions to our environment and health.

Due to a lack of sufficient literature, limited transportation, and restricted communication, society developed certain customs and practices as rituals to ensure their widespread acceptance and preservation. However, since education and information were not widely accessible back then, people were encouraged to respect these plants by associating them with divinity. Reflecting on this, I find it fascinating how these rituals bridged the gaps of that era, preserving values and traditions that continue to hold meaning even today.

Thus, it became a custom to pray and observe fasts in their honour. Reflecting on this, I find it fascinating how these rituals not only fostered respect for nature but also instilled a sense of gratitude. Even today, these practices remind us to care for our environment and acknowledge the life-giving role of plants.

What do you think? Can such ancient customs inspire us to embrace sustainability and mindfulness in our modern lives?

Amla Navami 2025

Likewise, Akshaya Navami is an important day to honour Indian gooseberry aka Amla. Akshay Navami or Amla Navami is the day to rejoice and pray to Amla tree.

Significance of Akshaya Navami 2025

However, Akshaya Navami is revered as a day of never-diminishing merit. According to Hindu mythology, this sacred day marks the beginning of the Satya Yuga, the age of truth and purity, earning it the name Satya Yugadi. Just as Akshaya Tritiya signifies the dawn of the Treta Yuga, Akshaya Navami holds similar reverence for the Satya Yuga.

What fascinates me most is the belief that acts of charity, devotion and rituals performed on this day bring blessings that are eternal—rewards that transcend the bounds of time and ripple into future lives.

Furthermore, I find a sense of motivation to embrace the true spirit of the day, knowing that even the smallest act of kindness can leave a lasting impact.

Why to worship Amla tree?

One of the most cherished rituals on Akshaya Navami is the worship of the Amla (Indian gooseberry) tree, revered as a symbol of health, prosperity, and longevity in Hindu culture. Growing up, I often saw my family perform this ritual with great devotion, circumambulating the tree and offering prayers.

Besides, it wasn’t just about the act itself; it was a moment of connection with nature and a reminder of the blessings it bestows. Even today, when I participate in this ritual, I feel a profound sense of gratitude for the harmony it brings to both body and spirit.

Preparing Amla Recipe

Many devotees, therefore, honor the sacredness of Amla on Akshaya Navami by preparing meals that incorporate this life-giving fruit, symbolizing health and vitality. I remember the sweet-tangy aroma of Amla dishes filling our home, reminding us of its profound significance in our lives.

Amla Navami in Mathura Vrindavan

In addition, Akshaya Navami holds special reverence in the holy cities of Mathura and Vrindavan, where devotees undertake the revered Parikrama (circumambulation) of these sacred towns. Thousands of devotees gather for this pilgrimage, believing it brings everlasting spiritual merit, divine blessings, and purification of the soul.

As I told my readers earlier, being a Shyam Diwani, I have walked along these vibrant paths myself on Amla Navami. Yet, I recall feeling an indescribable energy, as if the chants and devotion of countless pilgrims lifted my spirit, leaving an everlasting impression on my heart.

Charity and devotion on Amla Navami

With its focus on “Akshaya,” meaning indestructible rewards, Akshaya Navami encourages acts of charity, prayers, and kindness. Therefore, many devotees give alms, distribute food to the poor, and extend help to those in need. These simple yet profound actions are believed to bring immense blessings. As a result, they ensure prosperity and well-being in life.

Personally, I find this aspect of the day deeply inspiring. Whenever I participate in such charitable acts, I feel a sense of fulfillment, knowing that even small gestures can make a big difference. It’s a beautiful reminder of how compassion connects us all.

Jagaddhatri Puja in West Bengal

In West Bengal, Akshaya Navami coincides with Jagaddhatri Puja. This vibrant festival honors Goddess Jagaddhatri, an incarnation of Goddess Durga. She is celebrated as the divine nurturer and protector of the universe. The puja is marked by grandeur and deep devotion, making it culturally and religiously significant in Bengal.
