Indian culture is an abode of festivals which people celebrate throughout the country. Amongst many, Akshaya Tritiya is an important occasion in the Hindu religion. Also, it is important due to a pious tithi.

Akshaya Tritiya is a very important day for Hindus as it has abhuj Muhurat all throughout the day. Abhuj Muhurat is when there is shubh muhurat all through out the day. Apart from Akshaya Tritiya, we have Basant Panchami for abhuj muhurat.

Moreover, there is a huge importance of tithi in Hinduism which impacts human life in unique way. The Hindu panchang works on the concept of Tithis which is based on the planetary movement of the Sun and the Moon. Akshaya Tritiya falls in the month of April or May as per the Gregorian calendar.

Why do we celebrate Akshaya Tritiya?

The meaning of the word Akshaya is something that is “eternal” or “never-ending”. It is also known as “Akha Teej“. It is a day on which anything that is done keeps growing or remains fixed forever. Hence, it is the best day for all good deeds and activities that increase profit in business, personal and spiritual life.

As per the mythological facts, it is also the day when there is no need of Hindu panchang/ Hindu calendar for any good time (shubh muhrat) for any ritual or ceremony. The entire day is perfect for any function or pooja. 

Additionally, people often start new ventures on Akshaya Tritiya. People have followed the tradition for ages and relished the fruits of this sacred day.

Date of Akshaya Tritiya 2025

As per the Hindu panchang, it falls on the third lunar day (Tithi) of Shukla Paksha in the Vaishakh mas.

In 2025, Akshaya Tritiya will be celebrated on April 30, 2025. The tithi will start at 5 :31 PM on April 29, 2025 and will end at 2:12 PM on April 30, 2025.

Infact, the puja muhurat will be form 5:40 AM to 12:18 PM.

Akshaya Tritiya is an important day for Hindus as the day marks some of the very major events. To name a few here is a list of things that happened in Indian mythology which made this day extremely significant.

Goddess Annapurna Birth Anniversary

  • On this day Goddess Annapurna was born. Goddess Annapurna is consort of Lord Vishweshar ( incarnation of Lord Shiva). Eventually, she was created by Maa Parwati when there was no food on the Earth.
  • Another text suggests, Goddess Annapurna emerged when goddess Parwati, the consort of Lord Shiva, disappeared after Shiva proclaimed everything, including food, to be an illusion. Parwati reappeared in Kashi (now Varanasi) as Annapurna, the goddess of nourishment. She opened a kitchen to feed everyone. This act symbolized her divine role as the provider of food and abundance. This Kitchen is also called Akshay Patra.

River Ganga came to the Earth

Jagannath Yatra chariot making on Akshaya Tritiya

  • Jagganath Rath Yatra: On Akshaya Tritiya of Vaishaka month, the construction of chariots began in Odisha, India for the very famous Jagannath Rath Yatra. Similarly, the Chandan Yatra festival begins in Vrindavan and continues for one month.

  • Change in season: This day is also the onset of Grishma Ritu ( summers) and the end of Vasant Ritu (spring).  
  • Badrinath darshan: On the eve of Akshaya Tritiya in the month of Vaishaka, Badrinath temple opens its doors to devotees.

  • Chandan Shringaar: On this day the divine Krishna enjoys the Chandan Shringaar all over his body. In many temples of brij (Mathura, Vrindavan, Gokul, Ramanreti etc) this is a popular practice. As Akshaya Tritya is the day when summer actually begins so devotees smear Krishna’s body with Chandan to provide him coolness. 

What to do on Akshaya Tritiya 2025?   

Akshaya Tritiya is a significant day in the Hindu calendar and is considered one of the most important days for performing various religious rituals and ceremonies. Here are some dos and don’ts that you can follow on Akshaya Tritiya:

Dos:

  • Wake up early in the morning and take a bath before sunrise.
  • Then after, offer prayers to Lord Vishnu, Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesha.
  • Donate water filled urn, kullad, sakora, barley, wheat, rice, gold, silver, jaggery, salt, ghee (clarified butter), kharbuja (muskmelon), cucumber, other fruits, eatables, clothes, footwear (slipper, khadau), fan (pankha), umbrella, saag, sattu, imli, sugar etc. It is highly beneficial for your family.
  • Likewise, perform Puja and offer prayers to Lord Kubera to seek his blessings for wealth and prosperity.
  • To impress Lord Vishnu, offer white lotus, yellow or white rose flowers. Do kirtan, Bhajan and recitation of other spiritual rhymes or songs. 
  • Additionally, wear new clothes and adorn yourself with jewelry.
  • Buy gold or other precious metals as it is believed that buying gold on Akshaya Tritiya brings good luck and prosperity.
  • Apparenlty, it is a good day to start a new journey as a professional, a new business, a travel, house-warming ceremony. For many it is best harvest season for farmers to attract good fortune and blessings of almighty. 
  • All the good vibes gather in the universe, Akshaya Tritiya is considered auspicious day for wedding, engagements, pooja, spiritual functions or other family gatherings. 

Don’ts:

  • Avoid consuming non-vegetarian food or alcohol on this day.
  • Do not indulge in any kind of negative thoughts or actions.
  • Do not lend or borrow money on this day.
  • Avoid cutting your nails or hair on Akshaya Tritiya as it is believed to bring bad luck.
  • Do not engage in any arguments or fights with anyone on this day.

Remember, anything you do (good or bad) on the Tritya of Shukla Paksha in Vaishakh month stays forever and returns the same result. So, be very careful while performing any act on this day.
